Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy was abruptly cast into the center of a political storm in the United States as the U.S. House launched an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump over a July 25 phone call between the two leaders. It has come under scrutiny because Trump prodded Zelenskiy to investigate Trump rival and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

Zelenskiy has only been in office for a matter of months following his landslide victory over incumbent Petro Poroshenko. He first rose to fame in Ukraine as an actor and comedian, most notably playing a high school history teacher thrust into the presidency after a video of him blasting corruption goes viral on the sitcom "Servant of the People."

There are calls for ambulances and reports of structure fires in Ridgecrest, California, fires after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit late Friday evening, according to Kern County Fire Chief David Witt.

Building up to the big reveal, Donatella Versace announced from backstage a Google search for "Versace jungle dress," and a dome ceiling above the circular runway filled with images of J-Lo wearing the 2000 Versace dress at the Grammys.

Then Versace intoned: "The REAL jungle dress," and Lopez appeared in an updated version of the iconic gown, which maintained the plunging neckline but in a sleeveless version and with a train that billowed below the open back. Not a smartphone remained dormant as the fashion crowd jostled to catch video of the fashion ah-ha moment.

No murderous hails of gunfire this time. No D-Day objective that had to be taken, whatever the cost. This time, 75 years almost to the hour after he parachuted into Nazi-occupied France, Tom Rice again found himself floating down through Normandy's skies, now a grizzled 97-year-old thrilled as a little kid.

"Woo-hoo!" the ex-paratrooper yelped after hitting the ground, carrying the memories of comrades lost in battle and on a new mission - of remembrance this time - for the ever-shrinking numbers who sacrificed so much in World War II.

"I represent a whole generation," Rice said.

Engines throbbing, C-47 transport planes dropped string after string of parachutists, a couple of hundred in all - including Rice, who jumped strapped to a partner, not alone and laden with weapons as he did on June 6, 1944.

The State Department has denied multiple U.S. diplomatic posts' requests to fly the rainbow pride flag on official flagpoles during LGBT Pride Month, according to two State Department sources.

Seventy-five years ago, Hollywood director George Stevens stood on the deck of the HMS Belfast to film the start of the D-Day invasion.

The resulting black-and-white films - following Allied troops through Normandy, the liberation of Paris, Battle of the Bulge, the horror of the Dachau concentration camp - form the basis of Americans' historical memory of World War II, and were even used as evidence in Nazi war crimes trials.

There are some things you can count on every autumn: the temperatures will start to drop, the leaves will begin to brown and Starbucks will bring its wildly popular pumpkin spice latte back for another season.

Many have come to herald the arrival of the pumpkin spice latte, or PSL for short, as the unofficial start of autumn, despite the fact that it often arrives well before the crisp mornings and falling leaves. In 2018, for example, Starbucks released the PSL on Aug. 28, the earliest date ever. Before 2018, the drink's official arrival date had for many years fallen during the first week of September.

Even now, in early August, the PSL anticipation is already beginning to build, although a Starbucks spokesperson reached by email this week said the chain wasn't ready to announce when the pumpkin spice latte will hit stores for autumn 2019.

Some residents along a rain-swollen Oklahoma river are evacuating after swift currents eroded the riverbank and undermined the soil beneath their homes, leaving them dangling over the raging river.

The dangerous scene has been unfolding along the Cimarron River near Crescent, about 34 miles north of Oklahoma City. A pocket-sized shark found in the Gulf of Mexico has turned out to be a new species.

And the mysterious pouches that it's named for, up near its front fins? Scientists say they squirt little glowing clouds into the ocean.

Researchers from around the Gulf and in New York have named the species the American pocket shark, or Mollisquama mississippiensis.

For the past three years, virtually nothing has hatched at Antarctica's second-biggest breeding grounds for emperor penguins and the start of this year is looking just as bleak, a new study found.

Usually 15,000 to 24,000 breeding pairs of emperor penguins flock yearly to a breeding site at Halley Bay, considered a safe place that should stay cold this century despite global warming. But almost none have been there since 2016, according to a study in Wednesday's Antarctic Science.

As Hurricane Dorian tears through the Bahamas, one woman is hunkering down with nearly 100 rescue dogs in her home.

In a Facebook post, Chella Phillips said 79 of the 97 dogs in her Nassau home were sheltering inside her master bedroom. She quipped that the dogs are going to the bathroom "nonstop...but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in."

Reconnaissance missions are an important part of storm preparation as a hurricane approaches, but one recent NOAA reconnaissance flight made history.

Gabriele Grunewald, one of the country's top middle-distance runners, has died at her home in Minneapolis after inspiring many with her long and public fight against cancer. She was 32.

Grunewald, who often went by "Gabe," was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma - a rare form of cancer in the saliva glands - in 2009 while running for the University of Minnesota. Following surgery and radiation therapy, she went on to finish second in the 1,500 meters at the 2010 NCAA championships.

She kept on running through three more bouts with the disease, forging a career as a professional athlete and U.S. champion while enduring surgeries, radiation treatments, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. http://abc7.com/5343736
